The convent of San Francesco is a Franciscan convent located at the western end of the historic center of Fiesole , in the province of Florence . It is located in via San Francesco, not far from the cathedral of San Romolo and the former church of Sant'Alessandro .

The complex stands at the site of the Etruscan, then Roman acropolis and finally the Fiesolan castle destroyed by the Florentines in 1125. The first religious nucleus was built by the Augustinian nuns starting from 1225, while in 1339 the chapel dedicated to Santa Maria was added next to it. del Fiore by the devoted tailor Lapo di Guglielmo Pellini. The nuns abandoned the convent in 1352, founding a new monastery on the Via Faentina.

Perhaps already around 1390 the Franciscans took over, who in any case in 1399 were able to start rebuilding a new convent thanks to the financial support of the Florentine nobleman Guido del Palagio. The frescoed porch in the under-arch, the dormitory of San Bernardino and one of the two cloisters date back to that time. The convent developed rapidly and gained importance, so much so that in 1418 it was the guardian friar Bernardino of Siena. At the end of the fifteenth century the church was enlarged in the apse, building the choir above the underground chapel.

In 1649 the General Study of Theology was founded, which continued its activity throughout the following century. Proof of this is the important Library, one of the most important in Italy for studies concerning Patristics and Patrology . The convent was suppressed in the Napoleonic era in 1810 and was reopened only in 1870.

Between 1905 and 1906 the church underwent a restoration which, under the guidance of Giuseppe Castellucci , brought it back to a neo-Gothic style. In 1998 the Bicci di Lorenzo triptych was placed on the left wall .

The seventeenth president of the Philippines Bongbong Marcos and first lady Liza Araneta Marcos were married in this church in 1993.
