On Day 3 I watched Presence, which is Steven Soderbergh’s foray into the haunted house genre. I actually liked this, despite its low-key pacing. This is basically a ghost story told from the ghost’s point of view as the whole film is just made up of these long, unbroken, wandering shots as the ghost eavesdrops on Lucy Liu’s family that just moved into the house and learns about their problems.

The family is broken and bit dysfunctional, and the ghost – I think – is just confused and trying to figure all of it out. The family’s daughter turns out to be ghost sensitive and can feel a presence in the house. She mentions it to the others and the haunting escalates from there.

But this film has an unexpected villain, not the ghost necessarily. Soderbergh does a great job of building tension in some very stressful situations, when the ghost – aka the audience – seems helpless to do anything. It’s an effective storytelling method, and I think the performances all around are excellent in this.

The only negatives are that it is a bit slow moving, and as far as haunted house movies goes, this does feel a bit tame. But at only 85 minutes, it’s a quick watch. A good one to see with your teenager I think. SYATM.
