We were taught that viruses are not life.
Period.
But the more we know the more we question.
Viruses are chemical systems capable of Darwinian evolution, but they are not self-sustaining.
You know who is also not “self-sustaining”: obligate parasites, such as pinworms.
And we agree they are a form of life.
The virus is an organism with two phases, one of which is the virion, clearly not alive, and the other is the living infected cell, where the virus genome becomes the commander of the cell metabolism.
