The world of restoring historic film footage will soon undergo a radical change with the arrival of a revolutionary new video enhancer by the Topaz company.

In this video we will give you a glimps of that this AI-based enhancer is capable of.
To do so we have selected the famous unique film about the RMS Titanic that sank on the night of 14 to 15 April 1912 after hitting an iceberg. This AI enhancer makes use of the diffusion principle.
The results are stunning!

We see the orginal poor quality Titanic footage side by side with the enhanced footage.

Please note that this is the combined result of this enhancer plus various other tools including motion stabilisation and manual removal of film damage. So there is still plenty for me to do!

Another clip shows in slow motion how severe film damage was manually removed by copying undamaged pieces from other frames.

It is very difficult to explain and understand the underlying diffusion technology of this enhancer. Basically noise is added to the source footage. This is done until no recognizable footage remains.
Then the process is reversed using a special mathematical algorithm that regenerates the original footage, but now in far better quality! Watch this:    • Diffusion models explained in 4-difficulty...  

There are some more examples of what can be achieved with this new video enhancer.

First of all we see a scene in color from Gerry & The Pacemaker's hit "Ferry cross the Mersey"

We show an enhanced fragment of a US Army training film from around 1910.

The video ends with showing another B&W scene with again Gerry and the Pacemakers. While zooming it is astonishing to see how the AI regenerates faces and other details.

My final experiment was to see what would happen if the algorithm was applied a second time to the already enhanced footage. It demonstrates that repeating the process a second time does not make the results go over the top, on the contrary! The results were truly breathtaking.
