jim preston (chris pratt) and aurora lane (jennifer lawrence) discover that the ship's cascading failures were caused by a damaged fusion reactor module and are forced to risk everything during a manual plasma vent to prevent the starship avalon from exploding. after the exterior vent fails jim preston must stay inside the vent tube to manually hold it open while aurora lane initiates the plasma blast, leading to a heart-wrenching goodbye before jim is thrown into the void when his tether snaps.
