Описание к видео Grow Unlimited Basil With This Hydroponic Hack

Hey everyone, in this video we show you the easiest way you can propagate masses of basil using a cool hydroponic hack!

Let’s start by discussing how to take your cuttings. There are some rules you can follow to get the most out of your basil. Firstly, if your basil has any flowers make sure you remove them all. This will encourage the cuttings to invest energy into growing roots instead of flowers and seeds.

After all the flowers are removed, cut the stems into shorter pieces, between 7-10cm long, or 3-4 inches. Trim away the upper part of the stems and the lower set of leaves. You can also cut any of the upper larger leaves – this will minimize water loss in your cuttings because a smaller leaf surface will reduce transpiration, aka water loss, through those leaves.

To root the cuttings, we will be using a DIY hydroponics system. To get started, get a seedling tray like this or something similar and turn it upside down. Then simply stick your cuttings into the drainage holes. We did the exact same thing with a polystyrene seedlings tray. This tray had slightly larger drainage holes, so the cuttings needed to have bigger leaves to keep the cuttings falling through the holes. Also, the leaves of the cuttings lie flat on the polystyrene trays, whereas the cuttings in the black trays were elevated.

Both trays were placed into a plastic box filled with about 2cm, or roughly one inch, of water with the lid kept slightly ajar. Make sure you use a box that has a transparent lid. This box was kept in a warm, sunny spot out of direct sunlight and the water was changed twice a week. Top up the water as you need to.

This is what the cuttings looked like about a month later. You can see how well the roots developed in almost all the cuttings. In the polystyrene trays root growth was also very successful, but the leaves did not grow as well as those in the black trays. The elevation of the cuttings in these trays likely helped keep the leaves dry and healthy. So if you can, go for seedling trays like these ones.
