Lasers and Sci-Fi sound effects were the first things that came to mind when I discovered the crazy but natural sounds these seals make.

Curious what I’d find beneath the sea ice, I used a 1m drill bit to make two holes—one for each of my hydrophones. I was ready to hear the cracking of the ever-moving sea ice, but the Weddell Seals and their strange vocalisations caught me by surprise.

I recorded this ambience at the beginning of the Antarctic summer, when some sea ice was still present, but melting quickly. The ice is greatly affected at this time by tidal movement, temperature-related expansion and contraction, and a host of other changing conditions. This results in the interesting, ever-present cracks and noises of a world under ice, while the Weddell seals can be heard chatting.
