On June 14, 2021, Chief Karl Oakman was sworn in as the next police Chief of Police for Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

“I remember my mother would always tell me, ‘Regardless of your circumstances, don’t ever lose hope because when you lose hope,’ she said, ‘You’re done.’” Chief Karl Oakma

Chief Karl Oakman was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, Wyandotte County. He was an orphan at 11. He is a graduate of J.C. Harmon High School. Chief Oakman attended Northwest Missouri State as a student athlete. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Government from Columbia College. Furthermore, Chief Oakman is graduate of Major Cities Chiefs Association Police Executive Leadership Institute.

Although Chief Oakman lost his parents at an early age, his relationship with them and their teachings taught him to never lose hope and to develop positive personal relationships with other people.

Chief Oakman comes from humble beginnings. He rose to the ranks of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. He truly believes that one should never lose hope and there is work to be done to achieve success. “[…] You gonna have to always understand, the way you come in the world does not have to be the way you leave it.”

Chief Oakman’s curriculum vitae with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department reads as the who is who of law enforcement careers.

Commander of the Special Operation Division, Traffic Division and all six uniform Patrol Divisions.

Commander of the Administration Bureau, which included the Human Resources Division, Information Services Division and the Kansas City Regional Crime Lab.

Oversaw the Logistical Support Division which consisted of 911 Communication Center and Fleet Operations Unit. Also Liaison to the Mayor, City Manager and City Council to address issues and work collaboratively with all city agencies.

Responsible for the management of the KCPD Human Resources staff to include Employees Health and Life Insurance, Worker Compensation Insurance, Limited Duty, Military and Sick Leave. In addition developed and administered several Promotional Assessment Processes. Develop and created the KCPD Officer Wellness Unit “Shield of Health”
