As DBAs, we backup our SQL Server databases, get alerts if there is a failure, and can physically see the files but do we really know if all our backups are good? The only way to really be sure if our database backup files are restorable is to actually restore them. The handiest way I know how to test backups is with the dbatools Test-DbaLastBackup command. We’ll walk through automating an easily customizable PowerShell script that reads in a list of SQL Servers from a text file, runs Test-DbaLastBackup on each server’s backups, and emails a concise .csv file with the results in an attachment.

Joe Gavin is from the Greater Boston area. He started working with SQL Server and Sybase in 1998 in the financial services industry and has been a SQL Server Database Administrator for a dairy cooperative since 2011. He graduated from Northeastern University in Boston with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (BSET) degree in Computer Technology. He has spoken at Boston and Providence SQL Saturdays.
