It's definetely an oddly relaxing thing to hear a horse licking a salt stone. But for some reason, the slow and steady sounds are calming and can even help you fall sleep. I've been asked "can the horse get too much salt?". The answer is that horses instinctively know when they've had enough. Don't forget, these are 1,000 pound animals, so what you may consider to be a lot in reality to a horse is not a lot. Horses rely on salt to stay hydrated as it does make them more thirsty and so they drink more water. That's good for their body function.
