More than a one-way street
•It's easy to believe that learning an idea happens mostly when you consume it - or take it into your brain
•This is how you gain knowledge about idea, but learning - when you remember, value, and can explain that idea - requires more than just an inflow of taking in facts
The learning highway
•Research (and personal experience) has shown that one of the best ways to learn an idea at a deep level is to teach it to others
•Think of your favorite teachers or mentors - they share ideas on a level that you can tell they really 'get it'
oIs it because they read the idea in a book one day and suddenly it made sense to them - because they're smarter than you? Hardly...
oIt's because they talk about those ideas all the time - teaching others
oIdea-consumers often get only a fraction of the benefits from knowledge that idea-expressers do
The paradox: Why you learn when you teach
•There are a couple basic reasons:
1.When you enter the learning process with the expectation you'll teach it, your awareness and focus increases - you do a better job of identifying key ideas and structuring them in your mind
2.As you explain the information, it helps reaffirm it in your own mind - it becomes clearer to you and you understand it at a deeper level
•It's as if when you speak about an idea (teach it), you siphon it deeper into the place within your mind that sees it clearly, makes sense of it, and creates an emotional connection with it



How to use this:
1.In your car, the shower, or when you have a few free minutes
2.Take a topic, something you recently learned, a strategy, or the content of a book
3.Express everything you know about it, like you're enthusiastically teaching someone else
4.Talk out loud (when possible), use gestures and facial expressions - really get into it
5.Explain What, Why, and How
