DECIDING SERVICE PREFERENCE IN UPSC MAINS DAF
How do you fill the UPSC civil services Main(s)exam DAF (Detailed Application Form)which you are supposed to fill after clearing the UPSC Civil services Preliminary (PT) examination. Dr. Vikas takes you through the process paying attention to various aspects of filling of service preferences in Mains exam application form (DAF).

(a) He explains why you should be careful about filling service preference in the DAF.
(b) He briefly explains the various civil services in the UPSC civil services examination (most of us know and are interested in only the IAS, or at most the IPS and IFS, but there are many other services in the civils exam and you should know about them, and about what the services entail and how the various services compare.
(c) What should or could be the ideal order of preference in the DAF?

DANGERS OF NOT FILLING SERVICE PREFERENCE IN MAINS DAF
Some candidates at the Mains exam do not fill the service preference at all (or would fill only the IAS); this is not good as the DoPT (Department of Personnel and Training) will consider that you are saying that all services (let’s say about 24 services) are the same for you and you have nothing to say on this.Let’s say your rank is 450 and you have filled only 5 or 10 services in the DAF preference indication, then it is likely that someone with rank 600 may get a service which was his or her 12th preference and so on. Whereas you will be considered only when all others (who have been allocated services based on their preference) have got their services!
The risk is that if you were rank 350 and had filled service preference then you would get a service which could be an ideal choice at no. 23 or 24 (at bottom of services)for a candidate whereas if you had filled the service preference, you may have got 7th or 8th service preference. The only thing to keep in mind is that you ensure that you are medically fit for it; for example, if you are colour blind then you are not eligible for services like the Indian Police Service (IPS) at the civil services. Medical fitness is anyway checked by government medical board which ensures that you are fit as per the requirement of a technical service. Dr. Vikas, in this video, also explains the things to keep in mind when filling service preference if you are already in service (for example, if you are applying for services if you are already in Revenue service and so on).

See the video and found out more on how to fill the service preferences in DAF: IAS (the greatest choice), IPS (all-India services), IFS (foreign service),IRS-IT, IRS-CE, Railway services (IRTS, IRAS, IRPS,IRSS, RPF), Accounts (ICAS, IAAS), DANICS, DANIPS, PCS, PPS, AFHQ, ITS, IDAS etc. See the video to know a little about various civil services and how you should rank them depending upon your likes and dislikes.
