Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Santiago de Cuba on Wednesday (Oct 29), bringing powerful winds and torrential rain to Cuba’s second-largest city.
The storm, which devastated Jamaica a day earlier, hit with 120 mph (195 kph) sustained winds, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Authorities said over 735,000 people were evacuated, as flash floods, storm surges, and landslides battered eastern Cuba.
Meteorologists say Melissa ranks among the top three most intense Caribbean hurricanes ever recorded — after Wilma (2005) and Gilbert (1988).
