Still, that doesn’t stop him from ruling cruelly, imperiously, the dystopian empire to which he’s appointed himself unofficial king. The other man sits on a real throne—one that he obtained via murder and treachery. His suits are pricey and perfectly tailored. Yet he’s virtually blind to the revenge plot percolating under his own roof and is ultimately thwarted by his blood-spattered conscience. Both roles—Hamm in ENDGAME and Claudius in HAMLET—were played with exceptional ease by the same actor. For his commitment to the classics, and for these superb interpretations of Beckett and Shakespeare, the judges have awarded an Obie for Sustained Achievement in Performance to JOHN DOUGLAS THOMPSON.
