Bringing birth closer to home for women in the Western Cape Yor Region

Torres Cape Hospital & Health’s (TCHHS) Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) on Thursday Island (TI) and Weipa demonstrates that women in very remote communities can successfully access culturally safe care with a known midwife and plan pregnancy care within a multidisciplinary team approach. “Bringing Birthing Closer to Home for Women in the Western Cape York Region” is a reintroduction of a high quality and holistic maternity service provision. Using proven robust clinical governance, MGP care , instilling a culture of respect and placing women at the centre of this collaboration illustrates that high quality evidence based maternity care can be provided in remote settings.

The Birthing on Country Centre for Research Excellence was awarded in 2020 to The Molly Wardaguga Research Centre. The BoC CRE Seminar Series is a key activity for the Centre to share the work, resources, and information with other communities, researchers, students, and service providers about the amazing, innovative work that is happening throughout Australia.
