A tour of Army Track and the West Head Fortifications opened in 2016, located inside Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park on the Sydney Northern Beaches.

The walk down to the fortifications is short but steep, it's only approximately 1km return, however almost entirely made up of stairs. Towards the end of the trail, just before you arrive at the fortifications, you will need to navigate a ladder. Don't feel too intimidated, as the ladder could be described as more as a set of extremely steep stairs with a handrail. Children should be able to navigate these safely without a problem, just take it easy and keep a very close eye on them at all times.

Originally the site included a vertical railway which headed down to the site not far from where the West Head lookout now sits. A horizontal railway also existed which ran from the south of the site to the north. The term "railway" may make it sound more grand than it was, a small cart running on a rail used for moving material or people.

Now on the site you can explore the two storey observation tower, an ammunition magazine built into the hill and two concrete gun positions which housed 4.7 inch guns. A hut was also on the site, but only a concrete slab now exists. Searchlight positions were also to the north and south of the site, but neither are now accessible, nor is it clear if there are any remains visible either.

In addition to the forts, the site also has excellent views across to Palm Beach, the visibility over the ocean of course is the reason why this site was selected by the military in the first place!
