The University of Johannesburg's (UJ's), Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC) in collaboration with the Institute of Global Dialogue invites you to a webinar titled BRICS and Local Currency Payment Systems.

From the onset, the BRICS sought to respond to the 2009 global financial crisis by positioning itself for reforms to international financial systems. They pronounced their commitment to the reform of the international monetary system, echoing a longstanding position of the global south. The BRICS called for emerging and developing countries to have more say and role in international finance, a more diversified international financial system. In pursuit of inclusive and mutually beneficial cooperation, the BRICS launched in Fortaleza, Brazil in 2014, its financial institutions: the New Development Bank and the Contingency Reserves Arrangements. In Ufa, 2015, it intensified interbank cooperation to enhance intra-BRICS trade. In Moscow 2020, BRICS fast tracked work on the cooperation among national payment systems with the creation of the BRICS Payments Task Force and the work towards a BRICS Local Currency Bond Fund.
