Our September fly tying meeting is one you won’t want to miss. Jim Johnson leads us in tying the Bad Hair Day (BHD), one of the most effective and versatile light streamer patterns I’ve ever used. On the BHD we've caught largemouth and spotted bass, rainbow trout, white bass, hybrid striped bass, longer sunfish, pickerel, speckled sea trout, ladyfish, spotted gar, choupique, and probably several other species that I’m missing.

The BHD was developed by upper-midwest guide, Dave Pinczkowski for bass, but as I noted above, it is effective on all kinds of predatory fish. We will tie a slightly simplified version that uses only two materials other than the hook - craft fur and flash. The craft fur gives it incredible action in the water, and the flash makes it a great attractor. We will tie the pattern in white and chartreuse (of course), so 140 denier thread in white or chartreuse will be best. Several of the craft fur clumps will be tied in using the reverse-tie technique, so if you haven’t learned or need to perfect this technique, this is a great pattern on which to practice.
