TFOS DEWS II is an epic global consensus on dry eye disease. Join us as we go through each section with the scientists behind the work. Find out more here: https://ocularsurfaceacademy.com.

In part 1 of this two part episode on pain and sensation, Drs. Galor and Hamrah discuss dysfunctional nerves and note that while these patients are "complex" say there are "no excuses" when it comes to diagnosing the neurosensory aspect of the lacrimal functional unit. Patients have nerves that are firing inappropriately—peripheral or central or both. It is a dynamic and mixed picture but ultimately practitioners need to understand what is contributing to pain.

Dr. Anat Galor is an expert on ocular surface pain and dry eye, and its relationship with neuropathic ocular pain. She is also an expert in the epidemiology and treatment of persistent pain after LASIK. Galor has evaluated the efficacy of several therapies in the treatment of neuropathic ocular pain. She has also focused on how ocular surface symptoms affect quality of life. She is a Staff Physician—surgical services at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Miami.

Dr. Pedram Hamrah is a clinician/scientist who has focused his research activities on antigen-presenting cells. Dr. Hamrah trained in Ocular and Transplantation Immunology at Schepens Eye Research Institute at Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary. There, he participated in research studies that resulted in findings that refuted a previous long-standing belief that the cornea is immune privileged due to the absence of bone marrow-derived cells and due to antigenic sequestration and subsequently resulted in a paradigm shift in corneal immunology.

Dr. Hamrah’s research has been supported by the NIH K12 Harvard-Vision Clinical Scientist Development Program, a K08 individual award, an individual R01 from the National Eye Institute, a Career Development grant from Research to Prevent Blindness, and his appointment as the inaugural Henry Allen Cornea Scholar.
