(16 Aug 2019) Emergency services were forced to react to a simulation of a natural disaster in one of several drills across Peru on Thursday.
Firefighters and paramedics responded during the mock drill of a magnitude 8.5 earthquake in the capital Lima.
In one exercise, fire crews transported an injured patient by zipline from the third storey of a building to the ground as hundreds of residents took part in the event, pretending to be casualties during the multi-hazard response.
National Civil Defense Institute chief Jorge Chavez said the simulation, which was held in several locations across the country, would help identify weaknesses and strengthen future operations.
The drill took place on the 12th anniversary of an earthquake in Pisco, which killed 519 people and injured more than 1,200 others.
Peru is located in the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, where 85% of the world's seismic activity occurs.
