India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivered a blunt message on national security and counterterrorism during an interaction at the inauguration of Shaastra 2026 at IIT Madras in Chennai. Speaking about regional security challenges, Jaishankar said that when a country faces “bad neighbours” that persistently support terrorism, India has every right to defend its people.
He stressed that India will exercise its right to self-defence in the manner it chooses, making it clear that no external power can dictate how New Delhi responds to terror threats. Jaishankar described India’s position as a “common sense proposition”, underlining that protecting citizens from terrorism is non-negotiable.
The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and renewed debates over cross-border terrorism and India’s security doctrine. Jaishankar’s statement reinforces India’s long-standing stance that counterterrorism measures are sovereign decisions and that continued support for terrorism will invite firm responses.
