CKMI was first launched in 1957 as the CBC affiliate for Quebec City, Quebec. Due to the city's low Anglophone population, the station often struggled and relied on the revenue generated by it's sister station CFCM. During it's CBC afflation, the most news the station would have would be a 5 minute news update.

In 1997, Canwest Global would controlling interest in the station, and launching retransmitters in Montreal and Sherbrooke. The station would be branded to "Global Quebec" later that year. Most of the station's focus would shift to Montreal, given the city's large Anglophone population. The station changed it's city of license to Montreal in 2009, and thus the station was rebranded as "Global Montreal".

The station's newscast has never been strong, either as a CBC affiliate or as a Global station. CFCF dominates the Anglophone market and CKMI has often struggled, just barely beating the CBC on occasions. In 2020, the station laid off the station's main anchor, Jamie Orchard who has been with the station was rebranded as Global. Currently, all newscasts except for Global News Morning are anchored from Toronto.
