These are Versace VE 3354 glasses in the 5460 Colorway (Top Black/Blue Havana). They are part of a collaboration between Versace and Dwayne Wade. These frames have a two-tone finish, with black along the top brow line and the front of the temple arms, cutting sharply to a blue Havana which has blue highlights and black lowlights. These are a classic masculine rectangular shape, which are balanced and bold without being overly large. This shape suits many face shapes because of its moderate lens width and bridge.
They come in two sizes: a 55 and 51, both with a nose bridge of 18 and 145 temple arm. These are the 55s with a lens height of about 40mm. Dwyane Wade's collaboration with Versace on their eyewear line has been interesting. In this latest campaign, he models a variety of sunglasses and optical frames from Versace's men's collection. The campaign, shot by photographer Mario Sorrenti, really emphasizes the uniqueness and detail of the designs. Wade has had a longstanding relationship with Versace, even wearing their designs during his Hall of Fame induction and attending their fashion shows. He also shared some personal items in the campaign, like his first NBA championship ring and a photo of his daughter, adding a personal touch. He's expressed that he sees eyewear as the finishing touch to an outfit, highlighting the importance of details in style.
These glasses are apparently out of production, and they are very hard to get. They retail for over $800, but I did not pay for these glasses. Rather, some time ago, I used my EyeMed insurance to purchase a pair of Starck Biotech Paris frames (I made a video about these) from Lenscrafters (because they were in-network and I was only just discovering independent artisan eyewear), specifically the SH2083T in colorway 002, with a unique screwless hinge design inspired by the human clavicle, and a floating lens design that leaves the lenses exposed at the top and sides, cradling the lenses from below. They are also hand-made in Japan (unusual for Luxottica).
Last month, Lenscrafters sent me an email indicating that I had purchased premium AR, and apparently they were not applied. To compensate, they offered me a replacement of comparable value, so I got the Versace frames at no cost because of their unique colorway/design, and I needed something blue to complete my eyewear collection.
To these I added polycarbonate lenses in Adaptive Progressives with no tint (the only options available online) with a Gen S Sapphire Transition. I usually get Trivex lenses with IOT Endless Progressives, tint and transition. I thought, how bad can polycarbonate be? Well, they are bad. With Trivex lenses with IOT progressives, the glasses disappear and my view of the world is clear no matter what I'm looking at-- far, near, mid-range, to the sides, etc. But with these Lenscrafter lenses, the vision is distorted on the sides, the optical clarity is crap, and the progressives are sub-par. Also, when I unboxed the frames, the temple arms were a hot mess, and it took my optician easily half an hour to try to straighten out the frames, and they STILL don't sit right on my face. This is in stark contrast to the Masunaga 100s, whose frames and temple arms were straight as an arrow, and fit me effortlessly, requiring almost no adjustment. And you can buy 2 Masunagas for the price of one pair of Versaces!
I like the colorway and design a lot-- I just wish they were better quality. The acetate is apparently Mazzucchelli Italian acetate, so that's nice. But the polishing is definitely not on par with Japanese brands. The hinge design is also quite unique, with a 5-barrel hinge design that is like nothing I have seen before (read: unique, but not indestructible like Japanese or German hinges). It also does appear to be replaceable, which is nice. The nose pads and dimensions of the frame work well for me, so if I could just get the frame shape tamed, and replace the lenses with something decent, these might be fun to wear. As it stands, these are not my favorite frames. Clearly, for the price of the frames, you are not paying for quality-- you are paying for the name.
