The "Jokeri" Light Rail Line 15 was first proposed already back in around 1918 by the architect Eliel Saarinen as some tram line for Northern Helsinki, then an idea arose of a green second U-shaped metro line in 1974 during the construction of the first orange-colored heavy metro line (was to be finished in 1977 but only first opened in 1982), but the Laajasalo stretch is being built as a light rail 2-line branch and the line in Northern Helsinki was realized as a light rail line now. It is 25km long with 34 stops, while the light rail vehicles can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h (only on some sections in Espoo though). There are only two small sections of tunnels (by the Tali Siirtolapuutarha/Tali Koloniträdgård and Hupalahti/Hoplax stops). The light rail tram no 601 in this video is the first ever delivered light rail vehicle for the Helsinki Region (delivered in 2020 and was on a test phase as the line 4S on Töölön halli/Tölö hall- Kauppatori /Salutorget). I was at the opening ceremony on 21.October 2023, but the queues were so long I couldn't reach to the very first passenger service on this line then. In addition, this is the very first suburban tram line in the Helsinki Region since 1953, when the then-last suburban trams perished (for the suburbs since then, local trains and metro trains have been operated until now, while the 10-line Helsinki Tram network is only concentrated to the inner city (extensions to suburbs like Laajasasalo under construction now though)
The light rail line from Keilaniemi/Kägeludden to Itäkeskus/Östra Centrum in Espoo and Helsinki (Linking three metro stations and three local train stations) was then proposed in 1990 and was almost decided on in 1994, but instead, the Vuosaari metro branch was built then and finished in August 1998, after which the light rail line was only realized with small buses and the light rail was postponed to ca 2030, but the light rail was brought forward and decided on in 2016 (while the last stretches of the Helsinki&Espoo metro was finished in 2017 and 2022), with Jokeri as the project name (Joukkoliikenteen Kehämainen Raideinvestointi, literally 'The Circular Rail investment of public transportation', but now was finally finished 10 months before the original schedule and within the budget. Now, the same project leaders are working with the construction plan of the Turku light rail system to be decided on in 2024-25 for construction for a 2029-31 opening. In Tampere, the branches towards Pirkkala and Linnainmaa are to be decided on in Autumn 2024, and in the beginning of 2025 the construction of the light rail line to Lentävänniemi will be finished. Also in the Helsinki region, another, second light rail line is planned in Espoo from Leppävaara to Matinkylä via Suurpelto. The construction of the Vantaa Light Rail Line from Mellunmäki to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport will start in Autumn 2024. Other light rail branches are planned in Western Helsinki via Munkkivuori/Munkshöjden to Kannelmäki/Gamlas, and the Viikki/Vik-Malmi/Malm light rail branch. The construction of the inner-city tram line 13 from Pasila to Nihti via Kalasatama metro station will be finished in 2024. The light rail vehicles for the further new light rail lines in the Helsinki Region are to be of the same Artic XL- type as here (but in the case of Vantaa Light Rail Line might receive a different colour--code as in the project pictures). This video is in English, Swedish and Finnish and is made by recording by pressing pause and play (half an hour with all the stops and telling what one can find there as a guide to the Light Rail Line 15), in fact it takes an hour to travel the whole line which has 34 stops and is 25km long.
