Crochet Kassandra's Beanie
Materials:
Crochet Hook: I, 9, or 5.25MM
Yarn: Eddie Bauer Alpaca & Merino Wool Blend Yarn, Size 4, Medium Weight (this is thicker than other yarns of this size), ~200 yards,

Attach yarn to crochet hook using a slip knot.
Row 1: CH 60, then place 1 SL st in the BACK BUMP of the 1st CH st to create a chain loop.
Row 2: Place 1 SC in current st, then place 1 HDC in the remaining stitches in the round (1SL st, 1 SC, & 59 HDC at the end of the row).
Row 3: Skip the 1st SC st, and in the gap between the SC & 1st HCD, place 2 HDC. *Skip the next 2 HDC, placing 2 HDC in the gap between the 2nd & 3rd HDC st.* Repeat * around the row (60 total HDC). This will create a spiral pattern. You should have 1 HDC remaining at the end of the row.
Row 4: To clean up the awkward gap, please watch the video at timestamp 6:24 to make sure you are doing this correctly. CH 2 and turn the beanie inside out. Working in the 1st CH next to the gap, insert your crochet hook in the loops there, and in the tail end of the 1st HDC, pull through all loops on the crochet hook for a SL st. CH 2 to get back to the current Row. From here, working in between the HDC stitches that form the “V” stitches (these are your groups of 2 HDC in the previous row), place 2 HDC st. Skip the 2 HDC to your next V, and place 2 HDC.
Row 5: Place 1 SL st in the gap between the CH 2 and your beanie. From here, continue to split the “V” stitches by placing 2 HDC st between the 2 HDC stitches that form your “V” stitches.
Rows 6 - 19: Skip the SL st at the end of the row, then continue to split the “V” stitches in a spiral pattern.
Row 20 - Using a stitch marker, safety pin, or scrap yarn piece, mark the 1st st of this row. Place 1 HDC (instead of 2) between each of the “V” stitches until you make it back to your 1st st of this row (30 total HDC st).
Cut a long tail of ~ 1 foot. Tie off yarn, then cinch the long tail between the last row of HDC st. Pull the tail to cinch the top of the beanie and tie it off three times to secure it. Use the tail to attach a pom pom or hide it on the inside of the beanie.
