Using the Large Hadron Collider, scientists at the ALICE experiment achieved nuclear transmutation by pure physics, not magic.

When lead nuclei race past each other at 99.999993% the speed of light, they don’t collide — but their electromagnetic fields unleash intense photon bursts. These energy pulses can knock protons out of a nucleus. Remove exactly three protons, and lead (82 protons) becomes gold (79 protons).

During the LHC’s Run 2, researchers created 86 billion gold atoms — but the total mass was just 29 picograms, far too small to collect, and each atom survived only a split second before breaking apart.

This isn’t a way to get rich — but it is a historic scientific achievement. The experiment proves that modern particle physics can accomplish what ancient alchemists only dreamed of, while also deepening our understanding of photon–nucleus interactions that will shape future particle accelerators.
