Franklin Roosevelt's first act as President was to declare a national banking holiday to stop a run on the nation's banks. This scene from It's a Wonderful Life captures the panic that was sweeping the nation as depositors found life savings wiped out in bank closures. Fortunately for those in this fictional town, Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey used the funds he had saved for his honeymoon to forestall the failure of his "good ol' Savings and Loan"!

Roosevelt then went on the radio to assure Americans their money would be safe in the banks and, after a week, he began selectively reopening banks, and depositors lined up at the doors - but not to try to withdraw funds but rather to put money back into their accounts. Some complained that "Roosevelt had saved the banks at no cost to the bankers", whose reckless loan practices had helped bring on the crisis, but this demonstrated the confidence the new President was able to instill in the nation and its economic prospects.
