Is it a bird or a dragon: who is the big-eared nightjar?

What do you get if you cross a squirrel, a bird, and a lizard? You might be surprised by our answer: a large eared nightjar. And looking at the pictures of this unusual bird, it’s easy to understand that the answer couldn’t be better.

If you decide that you’re looking at a lizard or a squirrel when you see a picture of this creature, no one will judge you. The fact is that the large eared nightjar really does look like a squirrel and a lizard at the same time, and even more so — like a dragon. You could say that this is living proof that birds and dinosaurs were once related.

So why do nightjars have such an unusual appearance? In fact, the reason is in their lifestyle. Despite the fact that these birds fly perfectly, they nest on the ground. They do not build nests, but hatch eggs directly in fallen leaves and dry plants, making a small depression in them. So such plumage and color help them hide perfectly among the grass. By the way, the large eared nightjar is not the only nightjar that has succeeded in camouflage. The nightjar family has dozens of species, among them there is even a giant nightjar, which can "pretend" to be a tree.

This large bird family is found on all continents, as for the greater long-eared nightjar, it lives in the tropics and subtropics of Southeast Asia. This bird goes out to look for food at night, hunting for nocturnal insects, and hides in the grass and foliage during the day. Even when nightjars have offspring (usually one chick), they also continue to hide not in trees, like most birds, but on the ground. Probably, the tufts of feathers on the head, resembling ears, as well as feathers around the beak, which hide it, appeared in the course of evolution precisely so that the bird could camouflage itself well and blend in with the plants around it.

Camouflage helps protect against enemies: small birds that weigh only 150 grams hide very well among the grass and foliage. Although, maybe snakes and other predators just don’t want to mess with a creature that looks like a dragon, what do you think?
