In April 1962, Ronald X. Stokes, a member of the Nation of Islam and secretary of Mosque No. 27 in Los Angeles, was killed by the LAPD during a violent confrontation. The incident began when police stopped two members of the Nation of Islam who were unloading clothes from a car, suspecting theft. The situation escalated into a larger clash involving a police raid on the mosque. During the encounter, Ronald Stokes was reportedly unarmed and raising his hands when he was shot and killed by a police officer. Several other Muslims were injured, one was permanently paralyzed, and the event sparked widespread outrage.

A coroner's inquest ruled Stokes's death a justifiable homicide, despite multiple eyewitness accounts disputing that conclusion. Malcolm X, then a key leader in the Nation of Islam, publicly condemned the killing and used it to highlight systemic police brutality against Black communities. He held press conferences, gave speeches, and called for justice. The incident significantly shaped his political thinking and was one of the events that pushed him to more actively engage in the broader struggle for Black rights and justice in America.
