STORYLINE
Vladimir Putin's party won a crushing victory in parliamentary elections, paving the way for the authoritarian leader to remain in control even after he steps down as president.
Sunday's vote followed a tense Kremlin campaign that relied on a combination of persuasion and intimidation to ensure victory for the United Russia party and for Putin, who has used a flood of oil revenues to move his country onto a more assertive position on the global stage.
Several opposition leaders accused the Kremlin of rigging the vote, and US President George W. Bush's administration called for a probe into voting irregularities.
With ballots from 64.4 percent of precincts counted, United Russia was leading with 62.8 percent, while the Communists trailed with 11.7 percent, the Central Election Commission said.
Nikolai Konkin, Secretary of the Central Election Commmission gave the latest results at 7am Moscow time.
"This is what we have: United Russia - 63.3 percent, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation - 11.7 percent, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia - 8.4 percent, Just Russia - 8.0 percent," Konkin said.
Exit polls seemed to corroborate the partial results.
