Lukla Airport, officially known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport, is a small airport in eastern Nepal. It serves as the main gateway to the Everest region. Located at an altitude of about 2,845 meters (9,334 feet), it has a very short and sloped runway, making it the most dangerous airport in the world. It is named after Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climbers to summit Everest in 1953. Sir Edmund Hillary helped fund and construct the airport in 1964 to support regional development.
