The sacrum begins as five individual vertebrae (S1-S5), but they later fuse into one bone. This bone is an irregular bone, and it's located within the axial skeleton.

The dorsal surface of the sacrum contains the following landmarks:

-Superior articular processes
-Sacral canal
-Dorsal foramina
-Sacral hiatus
-Sacral cornua
-Median sacral crest
-Lateral sacral crest
-Intermediate sacral crest

The ventral (front) surface of the sacrum contains the following landmarks:

-Base
-Sacral promontory
-Ala
-Lateral part
-Apex
