Pascal Bentoiu (born April 22, 1927, Bucharest, Romania – died February 21, 2016, Bucharest, Romania ) was a Romanian composer, musician and musicologist, with honorary degrees from several universities in the country and abroad.

He studied composition privately with Mihail Jora . He attended the Facultatea de Drept in Bucharest (1945–1947) and then enrolled at the National University of Music Bucharest (in September 1947), but was unable to continue his studies due to the exorbitant fees set by the communist regime for the children of personalities in interwar Romania.

After a period of working as a researcher at the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore in Bucharest (1953-1956), Pascal Bentoiu devoted himself entirely to his vocation as a composer. He was secretary of the Symphonic, Chamber and Opera Section of the Union of Composers and Musicologists of Romania (1968-1973), being its first president elected after the Romanian Revolution of 1989. Pascal Bentoiu was part of the juries of prestigious competitions .

Pascal Bentoiu was the most renowned expert on the music of the Romanian composer George Enescu. He analyzed all of his works and completed some of his unfinished scores: Symphonies No. 4 and 5, the symphonic poem Isis_, and the Piano Trio in A minor. He is the author of the most important book on George Enescu's musical work, _Enescu Masterpieces (printed also in English in the United States and in German in Germany).

As a musicologist, Pascal Bentoiu has written several books, dozens of articles and studies in specialized magazines, and participated in hundreds of radio and television shows. He has held dozens of conferences, lectures, and master classes, in the country and abroad.

His music is lyrical and colorful, drawing inspiration from the resources of Romanian folklore , as well as from serial music and other contemporary techniques. He is a composer with a refined, modern language, but focused on the values of musical expressiveness, having tangents with neo-romanticism. Pascal Bentoiu explores the areas of tonality, modality, and is based on the rigor of construction, sometimes involving programmatic ideas. Many of his works are grouped into cycles (String Quartets No. 3–6, Symphonies No. 6–8).

Bentoiu composed three operas, eight symphonies, four concertos, six string quartets, as well as numerous sonatas and six song cycles. His opera Hamlet_, completed in 1974, achieved international praise and had its world premiere in Marseille, France. The opera _Amorul doctor (Dr. Cupid) has a special recording by BBC Radio 3 and Radio ORTF Paris. The opera Jertfirea Ifigeniei (Iphigenia’s Sacrifice) was the first creation in the category of radio operas written by a Romanian and received the "Italia" Prize from the Italian Radio. The trilogy of symphonies, Culori_, _Volume and _Imagini_, relates music to the other arts, namely painting, architecture and literature.
