In this edition of HoCoPoLitSo’s The Writing Life, poet Joseph Ross talks to “the dean of D.C. poets,” E. Ethelbert Miller, author of several poetry collections, memoirs and anthologies, and co-editor of Poet Lore. Miller discusses the origin and span of his newest book, a collected poems, edited by Kirsten Porter, in which they researched through his forty-year archive: “To sit and have them bring out boxes of your life, in order, is really something that stops you. You start to think about your own mortality.” Miller talks about his range of work, as well as themes running throughout his career. The two poets discuss preservation of the D.C. poetry scene, the difference between Miller’s two memoirs, Miller’s writing process and the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as Miller’s beloved baseball and jazz. Miller reads “Is Eric Dolphy Coming or Going?” and “All Those Silver Bullets.” Recorded in October 2015.
