Who was Mephibosheth in the Bible? Discover the story of Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan who journeyed from Lo-Debar to sit at King David's table in Jerusalem.

Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan and grandson of King Saul, led a life marked by tragedy and grace. Born a prince, his world collapsed at age five when his family was defeated in battle. While fleeing, he was dropped by his nurse, leaving him crippled. He found refuge in Lo-Debar, a contested territory, under the care of Machir. Years later, King David sought to honor his friendship with Jonathan by asking if any of Saul's descendants were alive. He was told about Mephibosheth by Ziba, a former servant in Saul’s household.

Contrary to the customs of the time, which often led to the elimination of rival dynasties, David welcomed Mephibosheth into his palace, restored his property, and dined with him daily. However, Ziba betrayed Mephibosheth during Absalom's rebellion against David. He falsely claimed that Mephibosheth had remained in Jerusalem to take the throne. Believing Ziba, David granted him all of Mephibosheth's property. When David returned to Jerusalem, Mephibosheth cleared his name but still lost half his inheritance to Ziba. Remarkably, he cared more for David’s safety than his material possessions, exemplifying a Christ-like character.

Often misconstrued as a prosperity narrative, Mephibosheth's story is actually a lesson in grace, character, and loyalty. His focus was not on earthly gains but on God's purpose and having a relationship with the king, echoing themes far deeper than material prosperity.
