Traversing the globe is just part of the way Pat Farmer turned marathon running into a drive and a mission to bring awareness to critical matters facing our world and society today. His other roles include wearing the hat as Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Science and Training, and it is no wonder he received the Australian Achiever of the Year. An incredible story of how the greatest journeys always start with a single step. At just 18 years old, Pat ran the Sydney to Melbourne Ultra Marathon, his first ultra of many ultra-marathons, and the event that made him fall in love with sport. Since then, Pat has run around and across all corners of the Earth in a mission to raise awareness from various global humanitarian causes. Running in Australia alone, Pat holds the world record for the fastest crossing of the Simpson Desert by a single man as well as the fastest runner to circumvent the perimeter of Australia, a mere 14,964km. Internationally, Pat has run the length of Vietnam to bring clean drinking water and sanitary conditions to the region. He has run the length of India to raise funds for the education of disadvantaged girls. He ran with a message of peace in his 1500km journey throughout the Middle East, in an attempt to bring people together through sport. However, he is most famous for his 22,000km run from the North Pole to the South Pole, completed in one year, with not a single rest day. Pat has raised millions for various charitable organisations during his 30 year running career, including Lifeline, the Cancer Council, the Australian Red Cross, Diabetes Australia and the Nani Khali Project.
