The Japanese native, born in 1940, has been photographing his subjects with his instantly-recognizable gritty aesthetic and diary-esque narrative, all while incorporating an elevated sense of erotica. A recurring theme of “Kinbaku” — the Japanese art of bondage — has been tied to Araki’s photos and has thus made him one of the most intriguing contemporary artists of our time.
