At the 5th Edition of the Good Air Summit & Awards, held on World Environment Day, Prof. Dr. Sanjeev Bagai, Padma Shree awardee and one of India’s leading pediatricians, delivered a compelling keynote that brought public health into sharp focus within the climate conversation.

Speaking with the authority of years of clinical expertise and research, Dr. Bagai emphasized that poor air quality is no longer a distant threat—it is an everyday health crisis. He drew attention to a staggering statistic from Indian studies that link air pollution to over 16% of excess deaths annually, underscoring the urgent need for policy and personal action.

He warned that the health risks go far beyond coughing or asthma. Air pollutants such as lead are contributing to long-term lung diseases, particularly in children, while pregnant women are facing heightened risks like placental damage, premature births, and impaired fetal development. These issues, he stressed, are quietly impacting generations before they’re even born.

Equally disturbing was his focus on the invisible danger of plastics. Dr. Bagai cautioned against bottle feeding due to the release of carcinogenic chemicals from plastic containers, especially when heated or reused. He cited emerging evidence of microplastics being found in critical parts of the human body—including the brain, lungs, and placenta—raising alarming concerns about how deeply embedded environmental toxins have become in our biology.

Perhaps most striking was his insight into how plastics are disrupting human reproduction. He highlighted that rising infertility among young women, particularly in the 25–30 age group, is increasingly linked to hormonal imbalances caused by plastic-related estrogen disruption. These effects, he explained, are subtle but deeply consequential, quietly eroding public health from the inside out.

Dr. Bagai’s message was clear and urgent: environmental health is not separate from human health—it is its foundation. Clean air, a toxin-free environment, and reduced plastic exposure are not luxuries, but essentials for a healthy society. His keynote served as a powerful reminder that every environmental decision we make today echoes in the bodies and futures of tomorrow’s children.

As we mark another World Environment Day, Dr. Bagai’s voice reinforces the truth that protecting the planet is not just a climate commitment—it is a medical imperative.
