Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia which last erupted in 2015. Despite this, it's a popular tourist attraction where you're able to climb to the crater rim and stare down into the caldera of an active volcano.

I visited Bromo as part of a 3 day, 2 night trip to Mount Ijen, Madakaripura Waterfall and finally, Mount Bromo. The day starts early, leaving at 2.30am and jumping in an old Toyota Land Cruiser to drive 1 hour to King Kong Hill.

At over 2,700m elevation, King Kong Hill offers an incredible sunrise view over Mount Bromo and the surrounding hillside/volcanoes. Whilst it was relatively cloudy (and cold) when I was there, it did clear up for around 20 minutes to offer views of Bromo and Mount Batok which is an inactive volcano right next to Bromo. On really clear mornings you can see multiple other peaks behind Bromo which are part of the Tengger Semeru National Park.

Most people (including us) then head down Mount Penanjakan to the 'Sea of Sand' which surround Bromo. It's a sandy, desert like plain that surrounds Bromo and stretches for multiple kilometres, making up the Tengger Caldera. It's a popular spot for people to stop and take pictures with their retro land cruisers!

You then park up with hundreds of other land cruisers and make your way approximately 3km across the sea of sand to the base of Mount Bromo. A short climb up the stairs takes you to the crater rim which you can walk along - I don't believe you can walk all the way around the crater but you are able to walk far enough so that the crowds are spread out.

Not only do you get to see the size and scale of an active volcano up close, but you also get incredible views of what feels like the otherworldly landscape that makes up the Tengger Caldera. Unlike Masaya Volcano in Nicragua, there is no lava lake at the bottom. Instead, similar to Ijen, it is constantly emitting sulphur gas and you can see the deposits far below.

Is it worth it? I'm a big fan of volcanoes so I would say that it is absolutely worth it. If I was in Bali I wouldn't travel all that way simply for Bromo, though if you are making the trip then you'll also see Ijen and Madakaripura falls. It's a trip where you don't get a lot of sleep, but it's one of the best trips I've done so far.
