Leadership is not the privilege of a handful of high-flying executives. At its very best, it is a state of relationship between the leader and the led. A relationship cannot be possessed or dominated by a single person; it ceases to be a relationship then. This book recognizes that in each follower, there is an emerging leader. Leaders, on the other hand, are in the business of creating value rather than claiming valuable tags and titles. They create value by influencing people to excel and to be more productive than they were before. In the presence of a leader, people feel more energized and optimistic about themselves. Managers drive subordinates. Leaders discover followers. Followership is the informal relationship that grows between a leader and followers when a leader has something meaningful to offer to them. In the age of information, it is the follower that creates the leader.
