Rail Fanning In The Thompson and Fraser Canyons

Hello! If your new here, welcome to my channel! If you have seen one or two of my productions, welcome back!

Lets talk about directional running. From Kamloops, BC; west to Mission BC; Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP) mirror each other along the Thompson and Fraser Rivers. It's not until we reach a location known as the Basque; which is roughly 9km west of Ashcroft, BC, as the railways go, or geographically 9km south of Ashcroft; that trains start or end their directional running. All traffic running west to the coast will run on the CN's line and all traffic heading east will run on the CP line. This corridor of directional running is roughly 160 miles long. The directional running ends or starts at Matsqui / Mission BC. Aside from the coast and the Basque, there are 2 locations where rail traffic can divert to the other's line should the need arise. One is in Kamloops, BC, and the other is at Cisco as noted in this video.

CP's second bridge at Cisco??? What is this blasphemy that I speak of? Well, to get right to it, the first bridge was built in 1884 and it was a deck truss cantilever bridge. The original bridge was painted white or silver, quite a contrast to the structure that stands today. By 1909-1910 it was realized that the original structure wasn't going to be strong enough for the increase in locomotive weights and loads. The original bridge was dismantled and moved to Vancouver Island where it still stands over the Niagara Canyon, north of Victoria on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo line. A little note, as we fly under the current bridge at 20:30 in the film, you will notice the fine stone masonry work done on the piers. That stone work is from the original 1884 bridge. At the very top of the pier, where the steel of the bridge meets the pier, you will notice a roughly 2-ft thick layer of concrete. This was added to the piers to adjust for the dimensions of the current bridge.

This was a fun video to make, I hope you enjoyed it!
