Описание к видео 'We have to start humanizing each other' - Cafe Aretista with Brian Austin, Madison (WI) Police Dept

One of our longtime nonprofit advisory board members is Brian Austin, Captain of Investigative Services Section and Deputy SWAT Commander of the Madison, Wisconsin Police Department.

A veteran officer who has served with the department for 23 years, Brian is a political progressive who himself has risked being arrested to protest the right of 'we the people' to exercise our First Amendment rights.

Brian took the time to have this thoughtful exchange with me on June 11, 2020, even though he and his fellow officers had for the last two weeks been working 12 to 16 hour days, without rest, since massive protests in Madison and so many other municipalities across the U.S. unfolded after George Floyd's life was tragically trunctated in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Founder of the progressive organization Cops for Labor, several years ago Brian arranged for me to hold a Constitution Cafe on First Amendment rights and protections with members of his department that included everyone from the chief of police to rank and file officers to detectives.

Brian penned this thoughtful essay, "Crackdown on Protesters Not a Wisconsin Value" https://madison.com/ct/news/opinion/c...

Listen in to this candid and heartfelt give and take on where Brian thinks we as a society need to go from here if we're to confront and try to resolve our most intractable problems.
