tonight in Oakland: the a’s begin their final home-stand at the coliseum…. not just of this month, and of this season. but … for ever.

it’s something that has obviously been on the calendar for a long time, but arrived so quickly. and now the tragedy that some have been anticipating since april 2023, is the reality that all will be experiencing come thursday, september 26th… once that final home game is over.

i realize there are still actual baseball games to be played. final scores to be tallied. and some milestones to be reached. brent rooker aiming for 40, langeliers & miller shooting for respective 30’s.. i hope gelof and butler both get to 20-20 campaigns.

i literally love all those guys as players, and i truly wish them the best. but no offense, right here right now… none of that… is on my radar this weekend. or the rest of the way. i really couldn’t care less about anything from a baseball sense. i do care about something that was a living, breathing passion for so many.. that will soon become extinct.

actual baseball became the sub-story long ago for the supporters of Oakland. and now, this is entirely about the fans, the journey, the experience, the love, the hurt, and the end.

i plan to make one last trip to the coliseum in its baseball configuration… scoop up some dirt, take one last glance, and walk back out the tunnel. quite honestly i’d rather remember that place with the orange seats, and going to my first ever games of the 80’s, and being innocently excited about learning baseball… rather than whatever these last couple years have become.

it’s also amazing how much green & gold stuff… one can acquire over the decades. sadly, all those jerseys, shirts, posters, stickers… they have either been tossed, or assigned to their new home. a cardboard box, in our attic.

people have asked… will i still make videos about the a’s after this season is over?
to be honest, my brain hasn’t even got that far yet.

considering that… i’ve already lost the team I covered.
then lost my job connected to it… i’m not sure how much i need all those vibes in my life.

however…

i certainly will never lose my connections with sports fans of the east bay… the bay area, and NorCal. and i do intend to respect the legacy of what this franchise was for more than 50 years locally.

also… painful as it might be… i will continue documenting the important history of relocation unfolding, right before our eyes.

i wish i could say something that made anyone feel better.

but here are some general pieces of advice for everyone. if you’re overwhelmed… give yourself some space… this isn’t supposed to feel right. if you’re not from around this area… just leave us alone. and if you are attending any fo the final 6 coliseum games… please be respectful and considerate of others.

this is… after all… the conclusion of a year-long funeral for major league baseball in oakland.
