A day after images of youths climbing atop a Vaishali examination centre went viral, Bihar HRD minister Prashant Kumar Shahi on Thursday said it was beyond the state government to curb or stop large-scale cheating in Class X board examination.
The exams, conducted by Bihar School Education Board, started from March 17 and on Wednesday the students wrote their mathematics paper.
Shahi said, “We cannot control or curb unfair means…when we are conducting a large-scale examination. There are four-five persons to help one student”.
The state government faced major embarrassment after local TV channels ran footage of people climbing the four-storeyed Gyan Niketan examination centre at Mahnar in Vaishali district.
Though such scenes are not uncommon across the state, the clear proof and subsequent police inaction have put a question mark on the administration’s efficacy. The HRD ministry has asked Gyan Niketan to explain its position on the video footages and photographs.
BSEB head Lalkeshwar Prasad, however, said district magistrates should ensure fair examinations with the help of police.

In Bihar towns like Hajipur and Nawada, entire families seem to be setting out for centres where the board examinations are being held.

And then, while students take the exam, their friends or family are clambering over school building walls to pass chits and assist them. None of them even attempt to conceal their actions. And this right under the nose of policemen posted at the centres.
