Marina Romero-Ramos, PhD, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark, talks on immune-related biomarkers such as chemokines, cytokines, and cellular-specific biomarkers in Parkinson's disease. Although chemokines and cytokines are starting to be replaced by cellular markers that provide a deeper understanding of the cellular environment in the periphery, they are still relevant in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). However, there is a need to develop alternative biomarkers like CD163, which provides specific information about the behavior of macrophages and monocytes. Novel cellular-specific biomarkers will lead to a better understanding of the role of different cell groups in the development of the disease. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
