During the First World War, the town hall was undermined by shells. The belfry resisted until October 1918 when it was destroyed by the routed Germans who were leaving the city. It was rebuilt between 1925 and 1934 with the assistance of the architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier. In 2002, the town hall was included in the inventory of historic monuments and in 2005, the belfry was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. It measures 67 meters high, weighs 3,000 tonnes and is supported on 144 concrete piles. Its terrace located 42 meters high overlooks the mountains of Flanders, the Lys valley, the slag heaps of the mining basin, Lille and its surroundings. The carillon has 11 bells, the largest of which weighs 1220 kg. He strikes the hours to the sound of the Madelon.

A huge thank you to the town of Armentières!
