In this week’s landscape photography episode, I hit the road around Hawker and the Southern Flinders in South Australia, stopping whenever something catches my eye. My first subject was an intriguing lone tree, bathed in harsh sunlight. To tame the glare, I literally used my hand as a sunshade, then captured two separate exposures—one for the bright highlights, another for the deep shadows—to blend back in post. From there, I stumbled upon a cluster of abandoned stone buildings, their crumbling walls whispering tales of bygone days. I opted for long exposures to convey the steady passage of time, letting the moving clouds and swaying grasses add drama to these stoic monuments.

Further south, I spied a group of gnarled trees just off the highway and set up my tripod—only to be met by sudden downpours and gusting winds that nearly sent my camera tumbling. Just as I was about to pack up, the storm clouds parted long enough for me to make my favourite shot of the day: twisted branches, framed against a brooding sky. Along the way, I’ll share my tips for managing unpredictable weather, stabilising your kit in blustery conditions, and choosing the right exposure techniques to capture both mood and detail in challenging light.
