The facts - 150 billion garments are produced every year. The fashion industry is a major contributor to water pollution, plastic pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. The US alone exports more than a billion pounds of used clothing each year and majority ends up in Ghana. Over 40,000 tones of secondhand clothing are shipped into Ghana every year. The problem - What happens to these second hand garments that are not purchased? Yayra Agbofah breaks down how fast fashion has affected the country, and its impact on the environment. Proposed solution - He advocates for sustainable clothing, and for sustainability as a practiced culture in the country, and across the Continent, noting that 95% of discarded clothing can be recycled or up-cycled. Yayra Agbofah is a creative social entrepreneur based in Ghana. He is the co-founder of AfroDistrict, a creative hub and consultancy founded in 2014, dedicated to tackling social and environmental issues through art, education, and entrepreneurship. He is also the founder of The Revival, a subsidiary of Afro District launched in 2018, that serves as a community led initiative rooted in up-cycling culture - an innovative and engaging way to manage global textile waste in West Africa.
