Veteran Actor Achyut Poddar Passes Away at 90: A Life Less Ordinary
Today, Hindi cinema mourns the loss of a truly extraordinary artist, Achyut Poddar, who passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 90. He took his last breath at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, just four days shy of his 91st birthday. His daughter, Anuradha Paraskar, confirmed the news.
Poddar's life was a real-life movie script. He didn't begin his acting career until his 40s and had no formal training, yet he carved out a unique space for himself in Indian cinema. This is the story of a man who was, in his own words, a professor, an army captain, and a corporate executive before he became a full-time actor.
A Multitalented Journey
Born on August 22, 1934, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Achyut Poddar was a brilliant student from a young age. He earned a gold medal for topping his university in his M.A. in Economics in 1961 and began his career as a professor in Rewa. Soon after, he joined the Indian Army, retiring as a captain in 1967. For the next 25 years, he served as a corporate executive at Indian Oil Company, from which he retired in 1992 at the age of 58. It was during his corporate years that his passion for acting truly blossomed, as he performed in plays and cultural programs.
A Late Bloomer with a Lasting Legacy
Poddar's acting journey began in 1980 with a small role in the film "Aakrosh." He never sought out roles but accepted every opportunity that came his way. His natural and sincere acting quickly made him a sought-after character artist. In a career spanning over three decades, he acted in more than 125 films, including hits like "Tezaab," "Vaastav," "Parineeta," and "Lage Raho Munna Bhai." He became a staple in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's films, and his iconic role as the strict professor in "3 Idiots," with the famous dialogues "Kehna kya chahte ho?" and "Kya baat hai," made him a household name.
He also left a significant mark on television, with memorable roles in popular series like "Bharat Ek Khoj," "Wagle Ki Duniya," and "Balika Vadhu." His portrayal of the character "Aappa" in the Marathi serial "Maza Hoshil Na" earned him the Zee Marathi Jeevan Gaurav Award in 2021.
A Life of Simplicity and Contentment
Achyut Poddar was known for his humility and contentment. He celebrated his golden jubilee (50th anniversary) with his wife, Ranjit Monga. His daughter, Anuradha Paraskar, a writer, even penned a book about his life titled Achyut Poddar: A Life of Simplicity, Resilience, and Contentment, which was launched on his 90th birthday.
Achyut Poddar's life serves as a powerful testament that there is no age limit for pursuing one's passion. His passing is a significant loss for Indian cinema, but his immense body of work will forever keep his memory alive. His last rites will be performed at 4 PM in Thane on August 19, 2025.
