Professor Tom Fletcher CMG is the former British Ambassador to Lebanon (2011-15) and the Global Strategy Director for the Global Business Coalition for Education, which seeks to harness private sector efforts to get 59 million children into school.

In this motivational Keynote Speech, Mr. Fletcher talks about the limits of governments, international organisations and NGOs in answering to the problems of our changing world.

The world has moved on - so must we, as individuals, actors and organisations who wish to make the world a better place. Mr. Fletcher talks about how a well-intentioned person would be more of a hindrance than help if he or she starts his own initiatives to help people in need. Individual delivery is ignored as current administrative systems in the humanitarian and public sectors are not ready for their participation.

However if this was the case before, Mr. Fletcher says that we now have the technological means to matchmake individuals to help solve the problems we have. He'd like to see a citizen-focused approach to development as we can all make a difference.

If governments are pledging 0.7% of their GDP to development aid, "individuals should give 0.7% of their time", he says.
